Pedophiles Screening Airline Passengers: Worst PR Move of the Century?

Airport security is a thankless job or, if you're the TSA, 56000 jobs. The US Transportation Security Agency was just blasted (again) for failing to enforce its own rules on employees, despite their claim of zero-tolerance for misconduct in the workplace.

Controversial priest in customer service fails to assuage public over TSA staff misconductAccording to Reuters, a report released by the Government Accountability Office found an unprecedented 3808 misconduct complaints filed against TSA workers just last year. Allegations include the use of drugs and alcohol by TSA agents on duty, 'inconsistent' use of security devices such as X-ray scanners, wands, embezzling electronics and other property, sleeping on the job, not showing up for work, etc.

The TSA was quoted by Reuters as stating that it follows "the highest ethical standards". Make of that what you will, but that looks more like a blatant  insult against all other government agencies than a rational response.

Speaking of integrity, 2012 also saw the TSA's hiring of a defrocked priest. The controversial move placed one Thomas Harkins in the role of Transportation Security Manager at a busy Philadelphia airport despite a sordid past that includes the sexual abuse of two young girls back in the 80s. In this exclusive interview, he reassures the public by stating that people shouldn't be worried.

To be fair, his role has more to do with the screening of passengers - including children - than it does with customer service quality. But I can't help thinking that if adding a superstar of this calibre (or caliber, for my American readers) to an already elite workforce doesn't help reverse the TSA's record of public dissatisfaction, what will it take?
